FBA Advisor Accreditation Program

The FBA Advisor Accreditation program will challenge the way you think regarding views on family business advising through the expertise of the facilitators and the sharing of experiences and learnings by peers.
Designed in partnership with the University of Adelaide our program enables you to demonstrate your increased knowledge and expertise through practical assessment tasks designed to further develop your skills in applying tools which will add value to you family business clients.This course focuses on the additional skills and practices that advisors require in order to be effective in addressing the unique issues business family clients encounter.

*Please note the session time is set in AEDT for the first 3 sessions and AEST for the last session. Please adjust accordingly for your local time zone.


Advising Business Families - Part 2

Building on the foundation developed in Advising Business Families – Part 1, this course focuses on the additional skills and practices that advisors require in order to be effective in addressing the unique issues business family clients encounter.

1. Explain the different stages of the family business consulting engagement.
2. Assess your competencies as a family business advisor and the role of collaborative practice.
3. Determine when to adopt as expert vs process-based approach to advising business families.
4. Diagnose the nature and complexity of family dynamics.
5. Conduct family assessment interviews and facilitate effective family meetings.
6. Understanding the principles for effective communication and approaches for resolving family conflict.

Topics include:

  • Complexities and competencies required to act as Family Enterprise Advisor?
  • Understanding Family Dynamics and the psychology of money and “wealth”.
  • Undertaking as assessment of the Family Enterprise system.
  • Stages in the family enterprise engagement.

Course materials:

  • 4 x 60 min online lecture (pre-recorded viewable at any time).
  • Useful reading resources for each topic.

Activities:

  • 3 x 2-hour workshops applying course concepts to actual family business case scenarios (these times are scheduled).
  • 4 Online discussion board questions.
  • Final case study assignment for accreditation.

Throughout the course you will be challenged to rethink your views on family business advising through the expertise of your facilitators and the sharing of experiences and learnings by your peers.
You will demonstrate your increased knowledge and expertise through practical assessment tasks designed to further develop your skills in applying tools which will add value to your practice.


Facilitator: Richard Boyce

Richard is a family enterprise specialist with a unique blend of experience gained over 30 years, being a practising chartered accountant, tax agent, company director and 5th generation member of a family that owns businesses across Australia, NZ and UK. Richard has worked as specialist family business and family office advisor with many leading global business families to develop their generational family enterprise model and is a former Partner of EY Global Business Centre of Excellence. Richard is also a fellow and academic faculty member of the Global Family Firm Institute (FFI), a strategic consultant to Family Business Association in Australian & NZ (FBA), Chair of the University of Adelaide Family Business Education & Research Group (FBERG), and an independent board member to a number of generational family businesses.

Richard’s passion is family enterprises and providing the support structures and mentoring to see generational families succeed for future generations.
